Frequently Asked Questions

What are the main types of hazardous location ratings for pressure transducers?

The main types of hazardous location ratings for pressure transducers measuring liquids and gases are:

  1. Explosion-proof (flame-proof)
  2. Intrinsically safe
  3. Non-incendive (non-sparking)

Each type offers different levels of protection and is suitable for various hazardous environments relative to the proximity to the hazardous division or zone and the means of protection. These certifications cover various types of pressure transducers including standard pressure transducers, differential pressure transducers, and non-incendive pressure transducers. Contact Core Sensors to align your certification requirements to the right transducer within the portfolio.

What are common applications for hazardous location pressure transducers in the oil and gas industry?

Common applications include:

  • Wellheads and Christmas trees
  • Drilling and completion operations
  • Well service vehicles
  • Mud systems
  • Compression systems
  • Vapor recovery units
  • Hydraulic fracturing processes
  • Cementing trucks
  • Chemical injection skids

Core Sensors offers a variety of sensor materials including stainless steel and nickel alloys to match the pressure and corrosion resistance properties necessary for each application. Virtually any pressure range under 30,000 PSI. Core Sensors also offers various electrical output signal options including low power analog signals for battery operated RTU’s.

How do low current consumption pressure transducers benefit remote monitoring applications?

Low current consumption pressure transducers, such as passive (millivolt) transducers, offer several benefits for remote monitoring:

  1. Ideal for long-term operation in remote locations
  2. Suitable for applications with limited power availability
  3. Enable pulsed operation for extended battery life
  4. Provide reliable performance in challenging environments

Core offers unique amplified output hazardous location pressure transducers for battery operated applications as well. View our 0.5-2.5V output option across our hazard location portfolio.

What types of pressure measurements are commonly used in hazardous locations?

Common types of pressure measurements in hazardous locations include:

  1. Gauge pressure (relative to atmosphere)
  2. Compound gauge (common in compressors)
  3. Absolute pressure (referenced to vacuum)
  4. Sealed gauge pressure (sealed at the factory)
  5. Differential pressure (difference in pressure between two points – common for flow, level, and filtration)

Core offers solutions for each type of pressure measurement in hazardous locations.

What factors should be considered when selecting a pressure transducer for a hazardous location?

When selecting a pressure transducer for a hazardous location, consider:

1. The specific hazardous area classification
2. Required pressure range and accuracy
3. Operating temperature range
4. Compatibility with the process media
5. Power supply requirements
6. Output signal type
7. Certification requirements (e.g., FM, CSA, ATEX)
8. Environmental conditions (e.g., vibration, shock, humidity)

How can pressure transducers improve safety in hazardous locations?

Pressure transducers improve safety in hazardous locations by:

  1. Providing accurate and reliable pressure measurements
  2. Enabling remote monitoring to reduce personnel exposure
  3. Offering explosion-proof or intrinsically safe designs to prevent ignition
  4. Supporting predictive maintenance to prevent equipment failures
  5. Facilitating early detection of potential leaks or process anomalies
