Class I Division 1 Intrinsically Safe
CS80 Intrinsically Safe Pressure Transducer Overview
The CS80 Intrinsically Safe Pressure Transducer is designed for use in Class I, Division 1 intrinsically safe areas. A wide selection of configurable options make the CS80 a versatile pressure transducer that can be designed to operate in some the harshest conditions.
Sensor Technology: Using bulk silicon strain gage technology, CS80 series transducers are designed with the latest MEMS technology. Strain gages are inorganically bonded to the sensing element material. Choose from stainless steel, Hastelloy C276, or Inconel 718 material to match an intrinsically safe pressure transducer with the right liquid and gas compatibility.
Pressure Transducer Output and Calibration: These intrinsically-safe rated pressure transducers are available with 4-20mA, millivolt, or voltage output signals, including low-power options operating from 3-5VDC of an unregulated power supply to extend battery life in IoT applications. Pressures can be configured in a variety of ranges and types, creating a tremendous amount of design flexibility to measure vacuum and positive pressure.
The CS80 intrinsically safe pressure transducer offers a great balance of performance, design customization, price, and lead time.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is an intrinsically safe pressure transducer?
An intrinsically safe pressure transducer is a pressure sensor specifically designed and certified to operate safely in hazardous locations where flammable gases, vapors, or dust may be present. The CS80 is engineered to prevent ignition of explosive atmospheres by limiting electrical energy to levels below what could cause combustion, even under fault conditions. The ignition is commonly referred to as “arcs and sparks.” CS80 pressure transducers should be wired according to the appropriate entity parameters in combination with an intrinsically safe barrier.
What are Class I, Division 1 hazardous locations?
Class I, Division 1 locations are areas where flammable gases or vapors are present in the air under normal operating conditions or may exist frequently due to repair, maintenance, or leakage. Examples include:
- Oil refineries and petrochemical plants
- Gas processing facilities
- Chemical manufacturing areas
- Fuel loading/unloading zones
- Paint spray booths
- Perfume factories
- Areas near fuel pumps or storage tanks
When should I choose intrinsically safe vs explosion-proof pressure sensors?
Choose Intrinsically Safe (CS80) when:
- You need sensors in Class I, Division 1 areas
- Installation and electrical connection flexibility are important (no special conduit required)
- Lower installation costs are preferred
Why should I choose the CS80 intrinsically safe pressure transducer?
- Certified product for use in intrisically safe areas
- Leading sensor technology with variety of materials for liquids and gases with challenging compatibility
- Quality product with 100% testing on all pressure transducers prior to shipment
- Made to order assemblies in the configuration you want and when you need it
- Great support staff from inquiry through delivery
Can the CS80 be used in wet or corrosive environments?
Yes, the CS80 features an all-welded stainless steel housing with a minimum IP65 rating, providing excellent protection against water ingress and environmental contamination. Core Sensors offers a sealed gauge reference package to further protect electronics from environmental conditions such as flooding.
What output options are available for the CS80?
The CS80 offers multiple output configurations to match your system requirements:
- 4-20mA: Standard industrial current loop
- Voltage outputs: 1-5V, 1-6V for direct PLC connection
- Ratiometric: 0.5-4.5V for industrial or off-road applications
- Low Power: 0.5-2.5V for IoT and battery applications (3-5VDC)
- Millivolt: 10mV/V for legacy systems or those requiring fast response time
How do I install an intrinsically safe pressure transducer?
Core Sensors offers installation instructions in our installation guide and the entity parameters on our datasheet. These resources should assist in understanding the installation and barrier protection requirements for installation in an intrinsically safe environment.
What makes the CS80 intrinsically safe?
In simplest terms, intrinsically safe pressure transducers are combined with intrinsically safe barriers and electronics that limit the potential energy at the sensor. This permits the use in a hazardous location per the standards in the certification file. This is different than an explosion-proof pressure transducer, where the electrical connection provides a protection method to ensure the pressure transducer can operate in the hazardous location.
