CS10 Industrial Pressure Transducer with DIN 43650A Connector

Choosing Between Vented and Sealed Pressure Transducers:

A Critical Decision for Measurement Accuracy

When specifying pressure transducers for industrial applications, one of the most fundamental decisions engineers face is selecting between vented and sealed configurations. This choice directly impacts measurement accuracy, long-term reliability, and maintenance requirements—yet it’s often misunderstood or overlooked during the design phase.

Vented vs. Sealed Pressure Transducers

Understanding the Core Difference

The distinction between vented and sealed pressure transducers centers on how each handles barometric pressure compensation:

Vented pressure transducers (gauge pressure sensors, PSIG) incorporate a vent path that allows atmospheric pressure to reach the back of the sensing element. This design automatically compensates for barometric pressure changes, measuring only the pressure exerted by the medium itself.

Sealed pressure transducers (PSIS or PSIA) have their reference chambers completely isolated from the external environment. They’re sealed to a fixed reference point—either local barometric pressure at manufacture (PSIS) or vacuum (PSIA)—eliminating any atmospheric compensation.

When Does Venting Matter?

The impact of barometric compensation becomes increasingly significant as measurement ranges decrease. For applications below 500 PSI, atmospheric pressure variations (approximately 14.7 PSI at sea level) can represent a substantial percentage of the measurement span. In low-pressure applications—such as water level monitoring, tank level measurement, or environmental studies—vented transducers typically provide superior accuracy.

Conversely, for high-pressure applications above 500 PSI, pipe pressure measurement, or installations in hazardous locations, sealed transducers offer enhanced environmental protection without compromising measurement integrity.

Application-Specific Considerations

The right choice depends on several critical factors:

  • Pressure range and required precision
  • Environmental conditions (humidity, corrosive atmospheres, submersible installations)
  • Maintenance access and capabilities
  • Installation constraints (hazardous area classifications, cable routing limitations)

At Core Sensors, we take a consultative approach to pressure transducer selection. Our standard practice is to specify vented configurations for applications below 500 PSI and sealed designs for higher pressures—but we routinely modify these recommendations based on specific application requirements and environmental factors.
