Intrinsically Safe Pressure Transducer Perspective
The oil field has utilized IoT technology and devices for the past few decades. This includes hardwired instrumentation and wireless instrumentation. In both types, pressure transducers are utilized to measure the pressure of liquids and gases. Because these transducers and hardwired or wireless instrumentation operate in hazardous locations, intrinsically safe and explosion-proof pressure transducers are preferred.
Many IO network companies design an intrinsically safe barrier into the node. This permits the direct integration of an intrinsically safe pressure transducer into the housing of the node. The node can be hardwired back to a panel or transmit a wireless signal locally or directly to satellite.
For wired instrumentation in IoT networks, a 4-20mA output signal is commonly specified for its noise immunity and ability to transmit the signal over long distances. Since the system is wired, the supply voltage is also commonly available in the 10-28VDC range. Core Sensors offers two-wire 4-20mA pressure transmitters in a variety of configurations and approvals. Intrinsically safe pressure transducers are commonly integrated if the barrier protection is integrated directly into the transmitting node. This also includes intrinsically safe submersible level sensors, such as the CS82.
Connectorized solutions are a great option for wired installations. The sensor and wiring can be handled independently. It simplifies the installation for the team in the field as well.
Wireless instrumentation offers quite a few advantages including simplified wiring and installation and the ability to access or reach remote sections of the field without a power source. But, this can also lead to more frequent maintenance for batteries.
Wireless instrumentation is slightly different than wired devices when selecting a pressure transducer. The supply voltage is commonly less than 10VDC. Some common supply voltages we’ve seen include 9VDC, 5VDC, and 3.3VDC depending on the battery or solar configurations. Pressure transducers are then designed with a voltage output signal to minimize current consumption, thus increasing battery life.
Some common configurations include:
